Based on the Millennium Project: Informatization of Education, which aims to achieve Internet access in every public elementary, lower secondary and upper secondary school by FY2001, and to achieve an environment that enables teachers and students to use computers in all classes by FY2005, we are implementing the installation of computers at schools, access to the Internet, installation of intra-school LANs, teacher training, development and proliferation of educational content and development of functions at the National Center for Education Information.

  Also, in order to cultivate the ability to appropriately choose and use information and information tools (Information Utilization Ability), computers and the Internet are being utilized in all subjects, beginning with the new Courses of Study to be implemented from FY2002, and subjects and content concerning information will be made compulsory at especially the lower and upper secondary school level.

In order to promote the cultivation of human resources who will lead the IT revolution and to promote the cultivation of highly technical professionals through information-related courses at universities, we are developing information related courses and majors to train advanced information technicians.

  Also, in order to promote the introduction and utilization as well as the environmental setting of IT within higher education, we are implementing a Space Collaboration System Project, which links universities and other institutions through satellite communications.

  Further, in response to the report of the University Council of MEXT on the Higher Education in the Age of Globalization, we revised our education system in March 2000 to recognize lectures via the Internet as a regular type of lecture to further promote IT utilization in university education.

As a part of a national movement for the promotion of IT, and from the viewpoint of introducing basic IT skills to all people including the elderly, we are installing computers and offering IT lectures at social educational institutions such as public halls.

  In addition, we are conducting surveys and research for all regions of the nation to receive information and training programs concerning school and social education, and education programs through satellite communications.
