MEXT Minister Hagiuda Koichi met with the US Embassy’s Charge d’Affaires ad interim, Joseph M. Young, on January 19 to exchange views on bilateral cooperation.

Minister Hagiuda opened the meeting by saying he hopes to further advance bilateral cooperation in space, in light of the memorandum just signed at the end of 2020 an agreement to cooperation on the Lunar Orbital Platform-Gateway in relation to the US-led Artemis Program. The minister also asked for the US to attend the Third Arctic Science Ministerial to be hosted by Tokyo in May. Minister Hagiuda then explained Japan will utilize online platforms amid the coronavirus, to continue deepening exchanges with exchange students.
Minister Hagiuda also offered congratulatory words on the upcoming inauguration of President-elect Joseph Biden and stressed the importance of strengthening Japan-US relations.

Charge d’Affaires ad interim Young said the importance of the Japan-US relationship will remain the same. Young said the US Embassy has long worked actively to build a partnership with Japan’s education ministry, and said he looks forward to promoting bilateral cooperation in science and technology and exchanges between exchange students.
