The National Language Research Institute, established in December1948, conducts scientific investigation and research on the Japanese language and on the linguistic life of the Japanese people. At the same time, it also carries out projects that build a rational base for the Japanese language by researching such topics as modern language, linguistic activities of the Japanese people, linguistic evolution as affected by time and locality and language education using quantitative methods. To promote Japanese language education for foreigners, the Centre for Teaching of Japanese as a Foreign Language was established within the National Language Research Institute in October 1976. It conducts basic study concerning the Japanese language, develops teaching materials and provides long term and short term in-service training for teachers of the Japanese language.
In 1993, the National Language Research Institute conducted investigation and research concerning the creation of a system to collect and make available information about study of the Japanese language and organized an international symposium to promote research and education concerning the Japanese language. which is on its way to becoming an international language. The Institute thus made efforts to enrich its activities.
