5. What Types of Interest Do People Display in Culture?
In February 1993, the Agency for Cultural Affairs commissioned a private research agency to carry out sample surveys on culture. One survey, a "Survey of Consciousness about Culture" (hereafter referred to as "Culture Consciousness Survey"), covered two groups of people. lower and upper secondary school students and those nineteen years of age and older. Another survey, a "Survey of Consciousness about Artistic Activity"(hereafter referred to as "Artistic Activity Consciousness Survey"), addressed Japanese artists and art organizations. According to the results of these surveys, the following conclusions can be drawn about changes in the state of cultural activities and in people's consciousness regarding culture.
